US, EU Ink Critical Minerals Pact to Deepen Economic, Security Ties

(MENAFN) The United States and the European Union formalized a landmark memorandum of understanding on critical minerals Friday, taking a significant step toward deepening transatlantic economic and security cooperation in a sector both sides regard as strategically vital.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio presided over the signing ceremony, characterizing the occasion as a "very important gathering" and framing the agreement as a direct response to dangerous levels of global supply chain dependency.

"Obviously, this shows growing awareness and commitment throughout the world, particularly with our allies in the West in Europe, the importance of supply chains and critical minerals to the success of our economy and to our national security," Rubio said, adding that reliance on resources "dominated by one or two places is a non-acceptable risk" — a pointed reference to China's outsized grip on global critical mineral production.

The agreement, Rubio stressed, is designed to secure "reliable, affordable sources" of the minerals that underpin everything from defense systems to clean energy infrastructure, while broadening the circle of trusted supplier nations.

From the EU side, European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic welcomed the pact as a catalyst for faster, more coordinated transatlantic action, arguing the memorandum would both deepen bilateral ties and accelerate shared industrial goals.

"With this memorandum, I believe we will be more strategic together and achieve our goals much faster," Sefcovic said, underscoring the urgency of converting diplomatic commitments into "concrete, tangible" outcomes for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

The signing reflects a broader Western push to reduce exposure to single-source mineral dependencies and build more resilient, allied-backed supply chains ahead of what both Washington and Brussels see as an era of intensifying strategic competition.
