Ceasefire in Ukraine easier to talk about than to apply

(MENAFN) While much of the behind-the-scenes discussions between US and Russian negotiators regarding peace in Ukraine remain unknown, it's possible to assess the situation based on public statements and the differing interests of the parties involved. US and Russian officials met in Riyadh on February 18, following a conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting addressed broader issues beyond Ukraine, particularly US security policies in Europe, which Russia views as a threat to its national security. Consequently, resolving the Ukraine conflict is closely tied to improving US-Russia relations overall.

During the Riyadh talks, the two sides agreed to normalize diplomatic operations and set the stage for future geopolitical cooperation, as well as economic and investment opportunities following the end of the Ukraine conflict. A path toward achieving a sustainable and mutually acceptable resolution was discussed.

After a failed White House meeting between Trump and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, which focused on Zelensky's refusal to pursue diplomacy, US and Ukrainian delegations met again in Riyadh on March 11. Zelensky softened his stance, agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire after the US temporarily halted arms supplies and intelligence sharing. The joint statement from the meeting emphasized the importance of Russian reciprocity for peace, though it raised the question of the timeline for such actions.

The US announced it would lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine, which could strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities and put pressure on Russia. The statement also included a commitment to addressing the issue of Ukrainian children in Russian-controlled regions, a topic that the International Criminal Court has used to accuse Putin of war crimes.

On long-term security, the US and Ukrainian delegations agreed to hold further negotiations, though the specifics remain unclear. Trump has rejected the idea of Ukraine joining NATO or receiving direct security guarantees from the US, fearing it could lead to direct conflict with Russia. Instead, Trump advocates for a deal centered around Ukraine's mineral resources to ensure its security. Meanwhile, Ukraine seeks European involvement in the peace process as a counterbalance to US pressure.
